Viral: The partners turned the experience into the guide on organizing hackathons

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace, finding its application in almost all segments of modern society, including education. Common models are increasingly being supplemented by technology-based extracurricular activities, and student competitions are a very popular tool that provides students with hands-on experience and business skills strengthening. One of the most frequently organized competitions is the hackathon, which is the focus of special attention of partners who have been jointly implementing the VIRAL project with European Union funds through the Erasmus + program for several months

Years of experience gained through working with startups and experts in the field of IT sector, as well as through the organization of a series of student business competitions and hackathons organized in the past, four regional partner institutions have translated into text and video guide on hackathon organization. INTERA Technology Park, together with colleagues from the Innovation Center Banja Luka, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center Tehnopolis and the Montenegrin Association for New Technologies, have prepared a brochure and video material for all organizations that want to supplement their activities by organizing student competitions, especially hackathons.

The detailed guide contains a brief introduction to the history and concept of hackathons and the most popular species and most common target groups, as well as the key steps that need to be taken in order to organize a competition at an enviable level of quality. A special section is dedicated to the experiences of project partners, both regional and European, with special emphasis on the activities of higher education institutions and the success of students in international competitions.

The created materials also serve as an introduction to the activities of the VIRAL project, within which hackathons will be organized at the faculties in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. The higher education institutions involved in the project, with the help of the mentioned organizations in the next more than 20 months, will provide their students with additional value and the opportunity to strengthen various skills through these competitions.
